Amid escalating military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the necessity of ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. Yui highlighted Taiwan’s increased defense expenditure as part of its commitment to improving its readiness against potential security threats. He stressed that while international support is valuable, the island must also prioritize its own defense measures.
A considerable U.S. weapons package, valued at approximately US$14 billion, is currently under review by the American administration. This proposal has garnered backing from U.S. legislators who perceive the defense needs of Taiwan as increasingly urgent due to China’s growing military activities in the region. The package aims to align Taiwan’s defensive capabilities with the rising level of threat posed by frequent Chinese military exercises and maneuvers near the island.
Yui emphasized that the scale of military assistance provided to Taiwan should reflect the level of threat it faces. He cited the regular deployment of Chinese warships and aircraft operations in Taiwan’s vicinity as significant concerns. Yui reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to safeguarding its security and democratic values through defensive strategies, signaling the island’s determination to maintain peace and stability in the face of external pressures.
U.S. officials have reaffirmed that Washington’s policy towards Taiwan remains consistent, with the security of Taiwan being a key component of the bilateral relationship.
