Elizabeth Reid, who leads Google Search, described these updates as the most significant in the product’s nearly three-decade history. The new features are set to launch globally across both desktop and mobile platforms. A promotional video highlights the shift from traditional link-based search results to AI-augmented summaries, offering a more interactive approach. Despite these advancements, users can still opt for the classic search experience through a “Web” tab that provides the usual list of links. The introduction of AI Mode has significantly increased user engagement, with chatbot-specific queries doubling each quarter since its inception a year ago.
Josh Woodward, responsible for the development of Google’s flagship AI, emphasized the goal of creating a “universal assistant” that is personal and proactive. With 900 million monthly users, Gemini is expanding its reach, although it still lags behind the weekly user count of ChatGPT. The integration of AI into Google’s search platform represents a broadening of AI use from specialized business applications to everyday consumer use. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans can now create “information agents” that perform detailed research and provide summaries or action plans. Additionally, the generative user interface feature can produce custom visuals and interactive elements based on user requests.
Google’s venture into smart eyewear is also making a comeback, as the company unveils a new line of “intelligent eyewear” in partnership with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. These glasses, equipped with voice-command capabilities and cameras, are set to hit the market in the fall. This marks Google’s return to eyewear technology after the initial backlash against Google Glass, which launched in 2014. The new glasses align with industry trends, as seen with Meta’s collaboration with EssilorLuxottica to produce similar smart glasses. Google’s future developments include a second model of smart glasses featuring an in-lens display, known as Project Aura.
